VITAL STATS: Luna Dementia includes singer-bassist Anthony Sica, a graphic artist and Palm Coast resident; guitarist-keyboardist Jeff Rankin of Palm Coast, who works in information technology; and drummer Mark Walker of Ormond Beach; who works at a T-shirt printing company.
Rankin attended the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles. Walker was a dancer in the early 1990s with the pop group C & C Music Factory, which had a huge No. 1 hit with “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).”
THE MUSIC: Songwriters Rankin and Sica describe their music as “original hard rock and heavy metal laced with supernatural, sci-fi/horror and deep metaphysically minded lyrics driven by power metal/progressive shredding and guitar acrobatics.”
Spot on. “Scream” is a prog metal epic that blitzkriegs today’s political scene. “30 a Day” detonates roiling, uber-metal riffage with Sica-penned lyrics spawned by the Iraq war.
The lads disengage their cerebellums for “Whiskey, Wine, Women and Song,” a slab of dumb-and-dumber hard rock that will make Kiss’ Gene Simmons smile - or leer. “Best of Me” and “Far From Home” doctor their riffs with feel-good ‘80s arena rock vibes.
For “Miracle,” the guys wisely resisted the urge to pimp-slap this shimmering acoustic guitar ballad with gorilla-handed power ballad theatrics.
SAMPLE LYRIC: From “30 a Day” - “They’re puttin’ away 30 a day in Arlington, in the grave is where they lay, these unfortunate sons. Masters of war, nothin’ but whores. Dollar’s the pimp that they serve.”
